Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Cervix/endocervix/vagina

Container/Tube: Sterile culture swab in sterile culture transport tube (Eswab with white cap or Red Copan double swab

Specimen Volume: Swab

Collection Instructions:

1. Specimen should be taken prior to application of any preparatory agents (ie, antibiotic wash, Betadine, K-Y Jelly).

2. Swab cervix and endocervix followed by lower 1/3 of vagina using a circular motion as swab is removed and then sample the anal crypts.

3. Return swab to sterile culture transport tube.

4. Label tube with patient’s name (first, last, and middle initial), medical record number (if appropriate), date of birth and/or Social Security number, and date and time of collection.
