Specimen Requirements

Container/Tube: Red Culture Swab (Copan) obtained from Microbiology

Specimen Volume: Swab

Collection Instructions:

1. Specimen should be collected prior to application of any preparatory agents (ie, antibiotic wash, Betadine, K-Y Jelly). Collect specimen.

2. Swab cervix and endocervix followed by lower 1/3 of vagina using a circular motion as swab is removed. Avoid touching rectum with swab.

3. Return swab to sterile culture transport tube.

4. Label tube with patient’s name (first, last, and middle initial), medical record number (if appropriate), date of birth and/or Social Security number, and date and time of collection.
