Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Fresh stool

Container type: Fresh stool in clean container to arrive <2 hours in microbiology. Stool put in Cary-Blair transport media if >2 hours to arrival in microbiology.

Specimen Volume: minimum 1 gm or 5ml

Collection instructions:

1.Label container with patient's name (first, last and middle inital), medical record number, date of birth and/ or SSN, and date and time of collection

 

2. Collect fresh stool and place in preservation within 2 hours of collection.

 

Specimen Transport Temperature

Ambient

Fresh stool must arrive in microbiology within 2 hours of collecton.If > 2 hours to arrive in microbiology then stool must be put in Cary Blair transport media (Green cap with pink liquid)

Methodolgy

The FilmArray gastrointestinal panel is a multiplex PCR test capable of qualitatively detecting DNA or RNA of 22 pathogens (bacteria, parasites, and viruses) from stool in Cary Blair transport medium.

 

This test is used to diagnose infection caused by Campylobacter species, Plesiomonas shigelloides, Salmonella species, Vibrio species, V cholerae, Yersinia species, enteroaggregative Escherichia coli, enteropathogenic E coli, enterotoxigenic E coli, Shiga toxin-producing E coli, E coli O157, Shigella/Enteroinvasive E coli, Cryptosporidium species, Cyclospora cayetanensis, Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia, adenovirus F 40/41, astrovirus, norovirus, rotavirus, and sapovirus.

Specimen Stability Information

Cary Blair preseved specimen is stable for 4 days at either ambient or refrigerated (2-8C)

Fresh Stool w/o preservative is stable for 2 hours or must be put in Cary Blair to extend stabilty time.
