Specimen Requirements

This test is not recommended for the evaluation of suspected sexual abuse, for other medico-legal indications, or for evaluation of children <10 years of age. In these circumstances, culture is the test of choice.

Spermicidal agents and feminine powder sprays interfere with the assay and should not be used prior to collection.

 

Specimen source is required.

 

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Specimen Type: Endocervix, Pharyngeal or Rectal

Container/Tube: Pink-capped Xpent CTNG collection swab transport.  Xpert Swab Transport Reagent is acceptable.

Specimen Volume: Swab

Collection Instructions:

1. Remove excess mucus from exocervix with medium cleaning swab provided, and discard.
2. Insert second medium swab into endocervix, and rotate for 15 to 30 seconds to ensure adequate sampling.
3. Withdraw swab and resheath.

4. Label container with patient’s name (first, last, and middle initial), medical record number (if appropriate), date of birth and/or Social Security number, and date and time of collection.

 

 

Specimen Type: Urine, first part of stream-not midstream (male or female)

Container/Tube: Screw-capped, sterile, plastic, preservative-free container

Specimen Volume: First 15 to 20 mL of void

Collection Instructions:

1. Patient should not have urinated for at least 1 hour prior to specimen collection.

2. Label container with patient’s name (first, last, and middle initial), medical record number (if appropriate), date of birth and/or Social Security number, and date and time of collection.
