Specimen Requirements
Specimen Type: Plasma
Container/Tube: Grey top (potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride) tubes
Specimen Volume: 1 mL for each timed interval
Collection Instructions:
1. Patient should have nothing to eat or drink for at least 8 hours before test (except for sips of water). Patient remains fasting including no smoking, chewing gum, or Lifesavers.
2. Draw fasting blood specimen.
3. Give 50g glucose by giving one full 50g bottle of chilled Glucola orally before drawing remaining specimens. Alternately 2/3s of a bottle of 75g Glucola can be given to reach the 50 grams of glucose.
4. Draw blood specimens after 1 hour.
5. Label specimen with corresponding draw time and interval.
