Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Plasma

Container/Tube: Grey top (potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride) tubes

Specimen Volume: 1 mL for each timed interval

Collection Instructions:

1. Patient should have nothing to eat or drink for at least 8 hours before test (except for sips of water). Patient remains fasting including no smoking, chewing gum, or Lifesavers.

2. Draw fasting blood specimen.

3. Give 75 g of chilled Glucola orally before drawing remaining specimens.
4. Draw blood specimens after 1/2 hour, 1 hour, 2 hours, 3 hours, and 4 hours.

5. Label specimens with corresponding draw time and interval.

Enzymatic

A glucose fasting specimen on patients for a glucose tolerance test will be run first before administration of Glucola. If fasting glucose is >140 g/dL, Glucola will not be given and the tolerance test will not be performed.
