Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Plasma

Collection Container/Tube: Mint-green top (lithium heparin gel) tube

Specimen Volume: 0.5 mL

Collection Instructions:

  1. Patient to have nothing by mouth for at least four hours, preferably overnight.
  2. Draw Serum IFP
  3. Give 325 mg Ferrous Sulfate orally with a sip of water. (Pill is provided by patient)
  4. Maintain NPO status for two hours.
  5. Draw Serum IFP

Interpretation:  If the post-dose serum iron level exceeds the pre-dose iron level by greater than 50 mcg/dl then the patient has normal iron absorption capacity.

Refrigerated 7 days/Ambient 1 day
