Specimen Requirements
Barnes Jewish Ethylene Glycol and Methanol Specimen Requirements
Specimen Type: Serum
Container/Tube: Plain red top- Separator gel tube is not acceptable
Specimen Volume: Full tube
Specimen Minimum Volume: 1 ml
Collection Instructions:
1. Do not use alcool wipes for venipuncture. Use suitable aqueous disinfectant such as Betadine, iodine,
or aqueous Zephiran to cleanse the skin.
2. Arm must be cleansed with water only.
3. Avoid exposure of specimen to atmosphere.
4. Centrifuge specimen within 2 hours of draw and send serum aliquot to laboratory refrigerated.
Specimen Transport Temperature
Regrigerated- Send to Barnes on ice pack to keep cool
Reference Values
Administration of fomepizole or ethanol has been recommended when methanol levels exceed 20 mg/dL and initiation of hemodialysis when levels exceed 50 mg/dL.
Peak methanol levels > 50 mg/dL indicate serious poisoning but must be correlated to presence of symptoms, since time of ingestion is often unknown.
