Specimen Requirements

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

Specimen Type: Whole blood

Container/Tube: Light-blue top (3.2% sodium citrate) tube; must be filled to line

Specimen Volume: Send entire unopened tube - If the specimen is uncapped, then proceed to plasma instructions.

NICU Min. Volume: 1.3mL (Call Lab For Special Peds. Light Blue Tube)

Stability: 18 Hours (Ambient)

Collection Instructions: Label specimen as whole blood.

 

Specimen Type: Platelet-poor plasma

Collection Container/Tube: Light-blue top (3.2% sodium citrate) tube; must be filled to line

Submission Container/Tube: Plastic vial

Specimen Volume: 2 mL

Specimen Minimum Volume: 1 mL

Stability: 4 hours (A); 14 Days (F), if separated and immediately frozen at -20'C

Collection Instructions: Label specimen as plasma.

Specimen Transport Temperature

Whole Blood: Ambient (must be received at testing lab within 17 hours)

Plasma: Ambient (must be received at testing lab within 3 hours), otherwise send Frozen

Refrigeration not acceptable
